What are some of the common building materials to find asbestos in?
Asbestos is a set of naturally occurring silicate minerals which are very strong and highly resistant to heat, fire, chemicals and friction wear, which is why asbestos became a relatively common building material for homes and smaller commercial properties built, extended, or renovated from the 1930s up until the 1980s.
After the health risks associated with asbestos fibres and dust were revealed, their use was stopped, but they present an ongoing and unfortunately unseen hazard in many homes, often due to poor or incomplete documentation about the materials used during building.
Some of the common areas to find asbestos in your home are:
Asbestos-cement cladding and roofing
Backing material for floor tiles and vinyl sheets
Insulation boards for thermal protection, such as around fireplaces
Textured ceilings and sprayed on wall surfaces (e.g. popcorn ceilings)
Lagging for insulation around pipes, heaters, and hot water cylinders
Textiles
Spouting and pipes for drainage and water supplies
